'Covert Affairs' Season 4 premiere: Annie and Augie hunt a puma

By Laurel Brown"Covert Affairs" is back for Season 4, and this time it's back with a whole lot more romance than ever before.

But is "Covert Affairs" back in a good way? The answer to that may depend on your perspective. Season 4 has some major changes -- the show is darker, and there is a whole lot of romance going on.

For some people, the darker tone is definitely a positive. At this point, "Covert Affairs" barely resembles the bright and fluffy spy tale it was during its first couple of seasons. It's more like "24" than that now.

And then there's the romance. If there's one thing that divides "Covert Affairs" fans, it's Annie and Auggie. They are very much together now, which can either be a good thing or a bad thing. Only time will tell which it really is.

The tease

Alas for happiness and simple plots, Season 4 begins with elevators and gunplay. Annie ( Piper Perabo) rides up in a dark building, about to face something terrible. Even though she tells Auggie ( Chris Gorham) she loves him, this is not a moment about love.

The door opens and Annie points her gun at a man. He points two guns back at her.

What???

Never mind

We won't find out the answer for awhile -- this elevator moment is 10 weeks in the future. For now, "Covert Affairs" is all about the lovemaking and the Henry Wilcox-inspired plots. Wilcox has given Annie a file about some South American terrorist called "The Puma" whose existence is about to bring down Arthur Campbell and all associated with him.

Auggie is somewhat skeptical about all this. But Annie doesn't care because she's Annie and she's on a mission now.

At least she doesn't have to go to Colombia alone. This is the benefit of having a CIA boyfriend.

Tracking the elusive puma

Naturally, Annie and Auggie undertake their mission completely off the record, making it look like a romantic getaway. It's not. Not unless your idea of romance involves tracking bank records, getting shot and chasing down really hot terrorists.

There's also a new guy in the mix -- Calder Michaels ( Hill Harper), a man who will somehow be a regular in Season 4. Also, he just happens to be the guy that we saw Annie shooting at from her 10-weeks-from-now elevator. Michaels turns out to be the CIA station chief in Colombia.

He doesn't like spies showing up and not giving a reason. But at least Michaels buys the beer!

Anyway, Annie tries to get some bank records, a move that gets a sleazy banker shot. Both of the spies would have met the same fate, except Michaels shows up just in time to shoot a bad guy. Their second attempt is kind of more successful -- this time they manage to track a courier with the money.

Only to get Auggie shot right before men with guns kidnap them.

At least the gunmen bring the spies directly to the Puma! He turns out to be a reasonably nice guy who is very, very hot and good at extracting bullets.

Also, the Puma is Arthur Campbell's son. So there's that.

Spies can miss obvious stuff

Joan and Arthur may be master spies, but they sure do miss a lot of stuff that happens under their noses. Both initially think that Annie and Auggie have merely run off on a romantic tryst. Although Arthur does get other ideas when he hears that they went to Colombia ...

Meanwhile, Joan totally doesn't pick up on the fact that Arthur is being super suspicious throughout the episode. And Arthur doesn't notice that his wife is pregnant and pointedly not telling him about it.

At least we can blame this on both people being distracted. After all, Arthur's career is abruptly finished and Joan has a baby in her belly. Oh yeah, that's a big reason why Arthur is being suspicious -- he has to resign because of secrets about to come to light. That's maybe a good excuse for missing a few other secrets.

This is the only good thing Arthur has going for him, most likely, what with the cheating allegations and the fact that his long-lost son is a terrorist.

Missing plane sent signals to satellite for hours

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — A Malaysia Airlines plane sent signals to a satellite for four hours after the aircraft went missing, an indication that it was still flying for hundreds of miles or more, a U.S. official briefed on the search said Thursday.
Six days after the plane with 239 people aboard disappeared, Malaysian authorities expanded their search westward toward India, saying the aircraft may have flown for several hours after its last contact with the ground shortly after takeoff from Kuala Lumpur for Beijing.

string of previous clues about Flight MH370 have led nowhere.

"MH370 went completely silent over the open ocean," said Malaysia's acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein. "This is a crisis situation. It is a very complex operation, and it is not obviously easy. We are devoting all our energies to the task at hand."

The U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to discuss the situation by name, said the Boeing 777-200 wasn't transmitting data to the satellite, but was instead sending out a signal to establish contact.

Boeing offers a satellite service that can receive a stream of data during flight on how the aircraft is functioning and relay the information to the plane's home base. The idea is to provide information before the plane lands on whether maintenance work or repairs are needed.

Malaysia Airlines didn't subscribe to that service, but the plane still had the capability to connect with the satellite and was automatically sending pings, the official said.

"It's like when your cellphone is off but it still sends out a little 'I'm here' message to the cellphone network," the official said. "That's how sometimes they can triangulate your position even though you're not calling because the phone every so often sends out a little bleep. That's sort of what this thing was doing."

The plane had enough fuel to fly about four more hours, the U.S. official said.

Boeing did not comment.

Messages involving a different, more rudimentary data service also were received from the airliner for a short time after the plane's transponder — a device used to identify the plane to radar — went silent, the official said.

Malaysia: No Debris at Spot From China ImagesPlay video

If the plane had disintegrated during flight or had suffered some other catastrophic failure, all signals — the pings to the satellite, the data messages and the transponder — would be expected to stop at the same time.

One part of the hunt is in the South China Sea, where the aircraft was seen on civilian radar flying northeast before vanishing without any indication of technical problems. A similar-sized search is also being conducted in the Strait of Malacca because of military radar sightings that might indicate the plane turned in that direction after its last contact, passing over the Malay Peninsula.

The total search area being covered is about 35,800 square miles (92,600 square kilometers) — about the size of Portugal.

Asked if it were possible that the plane kept flying for several hours, Hishammuddin said: "Of course. We can't rule anything out. This is why we have extended the search. We are expanding our search into the Andaman Sea." The sea is northwest of the Malay Peninsula.

He said Malaysia was asking for radar data from India and other neighboring countries to see if they can trace it flying northwest. India says its navy, air force and coast guard will search for the plane in the south Andaman Sea.

"Because of new information, we may be part of an effort to open a new search area in the Indian Ocean," White House spokesman Jay Carney said earlier Thursday, declining to offer additional details about that information or the new area.

The U.S. Navy 7th Fleet said it is moving one of its ships, the USS Kidd, into the Strait of Malacca, west of Malaysia.

In the latest disappointment, search planes failed to find any debris from the plane after they were sent Thursday to an area of the South China Sea off the southern tip of Vietnam, where satellite images published on a Chinese government website reportedly showed three suspected floating objects.

"There is nothing. We went there. There is nothing," Hishammuddin said.

More than two-thirds of those on Flight MH370 were from China, which has shown impatience with the absence of any results. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said Thursday in Beijing he would like to see better coordination among countries in the search.

The passengers' "families and friends are burning with anxiety. The Chinese government and Chinese people are all deeply concerned about their safety," he said at the close of the annual session of the country's legislature. "As long as there is a glimmer of hope, we will not stop searching for the plane."

He said China had eight ships and 10 satellites searching for the plane.

Malaysia has been criticized for its handling of the search, in part because it took several days to fully explain why it couldn't say whether the plane had turned back. Officials say they are not hiding anything and are searching areas where the plane is most likely to be, while trying to establish its actual location.

Besides the Chinese satellite photos and the so-far fruitless search based on the possible sighting on military radar, there have been other developments in the aviation mystery that have failed to lead to finding the plane or the cause of its disappearance:

— Oil slicks seen Saturday were found to have nothing to do with the jetliner.

— A yellow object spotted by a search plane turned out to be ordinary sea trash.

— Officials initially said four or five passengers checked in for the flight but did not board, fueling speculation about terrorism. Officials later said some people with reservations never checked in and were simply replaced by standby passengers, and no baggage was removed.

— Officials said two men, later identified as Iranians, boarded the plane with stolen passports. It was later reported that they were unlikely to be linked to terrorist groups.

Investigators have not ruled out any possible cause for the plane's disappearance.

Experts say one possibility that could explain why the transponders were not working is that the pilot, or a passenger, likely one with some technical knowledge, switched off the transponders in the hope of flying undetected.

Experts say that if the plane crashed into the ocean, some debris should be floating even if most of the jet is submerged. Past experience shows that finding the wreckage can take weeks or even longer, especially if the location of the plane is in doubt.

House backs bill to sue president over laws

Associated Press

By DONNA CASSATA

WASHINGTON (AP) — Casting Barack Obama as a president run amok, the House voted on Wednesday for a bill that would expedite congressional lawsuits against the chief executive for failure to enforce federal laws.

The vote was 233-181 in the Republican-led House as GOP lawmakers excoriated Obama for multiple changes to his 4-year-old health care law, steps he's taken to allow young immigrants to remain in the United States and the administration's resistance to defend the federal law banning gay marriage.

Ignoring a White House veto threat, the GOP maintained that the bill was necessary as the president has selectively enforced the nation's laws.

"Throughout the Obama presidency we have seen a pattern: President Obama circumvents Congress when he doesn't get his way," said Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Democrats countered that the legislation was merely election-year rhetoric to address a non-existent problem. The measure stands no chance in the Democratic-led Senate.

Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., defended Obama and said Republicans weren't satisfied with a "do-nothing Congress," they wanted to "have a do-nothing president."

Under the bill, the House or Senate would have a fast track for any civil lawsuit against the president if that president "failed to meet the requirement of Article II, section 3, clause 17, of the Constitution of the United States to take care that a law be faithfully executed."

Once litigated in district court, any appeals would be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Republicans cited the Obama administration's delays on several deadlines of the Affordable Care Act that the president signed into law in March 2010. Obama has drawn criticism for his June 2012 decision to allow young immigrants brought to the country illegally as children to gain legal status and remain in the United States if they attend school or join the military.

Republicans also have assailed Obama for tougher action on the environment.

"The president's dangerous search for expanded powers appears to be endless," said Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va.

Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., sponsor of the bill, read a series of statements by Obama when he was an Illinois senator in which he warned of the encroachment of the executive on the powers of the other branches of government.

In urging support, Gowdy said Congress is "not held in high public esteem right now. Maybe we would be respected more if we respected ourselves."

Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, highlighted past unilateral actions by chief executives, including President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation declaring the freedom of all slaves and President Harry S. Truman's integration of the military.

The Obama administration said in a statement that the bill exceeds constitutional limits, and Congress cannot assign additional powers to itself.

More specifically, spokesman Jay Carney criticized Republicans for stalling on immigration overhaul but finding time for the bill on lawsuits that he said would impede the president in limiting deportation of young immigrants.

It's "pretty amazing that today House Republicans went in the opposite direction by passing legislation targeting the deferred action for childhood arrivals policy that removed the threat of deportation for young people brought to this country as children, known as DREAMers," Carney said.

Obama's Gap Shopping Trip Is As Endearingly Awkward As You'd Imagine

The Huffington Post  | by  Ellie Krupnick

President Obama has been looking a little more stylish lately (hello, Canadian tuxedo!), and now we know why: He's taken an interest in shopping.

On Tuesday, POTUS made a stop at the Gap on East 42nd Street and Third Avenue in New York City, telling a sales associate he was on a mission for Michelle, Sasha and Malia. According to the pool report, Obama remarked, "I think the ladies will be impressed by my style sense," (not realizing that Gap isn't, y'know, Zara).

He also nixed a V-neck for one of his daughters, saying, "I'm worried the V-neck is going to slip." (Nope, it won't, POTUS.)

The excursion wasn't just for kicks; according pool reports, a White House official stated: "In his State of the Union address, the President called for businesses to raise workers' wages, and today the President will visit a Gap store to show his support for Gap Inc.'s decision to increase wages for their US based employees."

He's also showing support, apparently, for late-season knits, picking out a gray and white striped sweater and a bright coral one for his girls with the help of a saleswoman. He needed some assistance checking out, too. When he was told he could swipe his credit card himself directly in the card reader, he joked, "Oh, wow. So, you can sign the machine?" According to pool reports, he was just kidding: "They had these around the last time I shopped."

Sureeeee.

Brilliant, but socially inept, forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperence Brennan works at the Jeffersonian Institute in Washington DC. After consulting for him on a FBI case, she is approached by cocky yet charming ex-Army Ranger turned Special Agent, Seeley Booth to help the Bureau solve crimes by identifying human remains that are too far gone for standard FBI forensic investigations. Brennan's empirical, literal view of the world causes friction with Booths emotive, instinctive attitude creating a volatile relationship. However as their case load increases the symbiotic partnership produces results and with the support of Brennan's Squint Squad, murderers, past and present should be on the look out.....While we’re obviously intrigued by what is sure to be a stomach-turning scene when a human body gets blown up by a bomb in Bones Season 8, Episode 3: “The Gunk in the Garage,” there’s another part of this episode that has us feelingplenty curious. Somebody is going to be romancing hot new FBI Special Agent Olivia Sparling (Danielle Panabaker). Got any ideas who it might be?. ...Bones, a darkly amusing procedural entering its seventh season, is inspired by real-life forensic anthropologist and novelist Kathy Reichs. Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) is a highly skilled forensic anthropologist who works at the Jeffersonian Institute in Washington, D.C., and writes novels on the side. When the standard methods of identifying a body are useless (when the remains are so badly decomposed, burned or destroyed), law enforcement calls on Brennan for her uncanny ability to read clues left behind in the victim's bones.....As such, crafting the Season 9 premiere (Monday at 8/7c, Fox), which takes place a few months after where the finale left off, became a bit tricky. After all, before that happy day comes, Booth and Brennan have to work through the consequences of Booth's lie. "We had to figure out: 'How do we continue telling the story of these two people in an honest way?'" executive producer Stephan Nathan says. "The only way we could do that was have them face this most painful situation and get them to the brink of almost breaking up. What is that thing that allows them to stay together? Hopefully that will be that thing that allows them to get married."....
